Placentia Arte è lieta di presentare OVERCOME AND HELP, mostra personale di Michele Napoli.
Fosse stato un linguista, Sun Tzu avrebbe forse sentenziato così: “Se un termine è ostensivo perde in possibilità di significato, se evocativo è più facile a fraintendersi.”
Le parole si infrangono contro una membrana riflettente verso l’interno, quella che delimita l’impossibilità di dire fino in fondo ciò di cui parliamo. Armi e scenari bellici senza storia sono strumento per affrontare i confini del linguaggio all’interno di ipotesi irreali di rivendicazione del proprio diritto di affermazione. I coloni britannici del New England rivendicavano le loro intenzioni umanitarie mettendo in bocca suppliche d’aiuto agli indigeni raffigurati sui loro blasoni.
Il titolo della mostra inverte l’ordine delle parole presenti sul Gran Sigillo della Massachusetts Bay Colony: Come Over (venire) diventa Overcome (prevalere, sopraffare). L’immagine del sigillo compare su improbabili bandiere statunitensi, simboli di un’America negata ai suoi stessi nativi al punto di privarli persino dell’identità nominale, chiamandoli indiani senza mai correggersi nei secoli. Armi a doppia e contraria impugnatura si mostrano come oggetti di una battaglia impari sempre in atto nel linguaggio, luogo convenzionale per una relazione incompleta tra gli uomini. Riecheggia il diktat wittgensteiniano: la natura delle cose è fuori dalla portata del nostro dire.

Placentia Arte is delighted to present OVERCOME AND HELP, a solo exhibition by Michele Napoli.
If he had been a linguist, Sun Tzu would have spoken as follows: “If a word is ostensive, it loses the possibility of meaning; if it is evocative, it is easier to be misunderstood.”
Words break against a reflective membrane on the inner side, which borders the impossibility to fully say, exactly, what we speak about. Weapons and war scenarios without context are tools to confront language’s borders within the unreal hypothesis of claiming one’s own right of affirmation.
New England’s British colonists claimed their humanitarian intention, portraying on their coats of arms natives with invocations of “help” in their mouths. The exhibition title inverts the order of the words on the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s seal: “Come Over” is turned into “Overcome”. The image of the seal appears on unlikely United States flags, symbols of an America denied to its own natives up to the point of robbing their proper name, calling them Indians over the centuries. Weapons with double and contrary grips appear as a symbol of the unequal, never-ending battle of the language, the conventional place for an imperfect relationship amongst humankind. Over all, Wittgenstein’s assertion resounds: the essence of things goes beyond the limits of what can be said.
